1. 뮤지컬 컴포트 우먼, 이 무대에 서기까지 과정이 어떠셨나요?
우리의 이야기를 우리나라가 아닌 뉴욕 관객들에게 전달할 수 있다는 것에 큰 의미를 두고 지원하게 되었습니다. 오디션 사이트에서 작품 공고를 보고 영어로 노래하는 영상과 연기하는 영상을 보냈고, 예비군 훈련이 끝나고 집에 가던 도중 최종 합격 전화가 왔을 때, 너무 기뻐서 군복을 입고 행복해 하던 기억이 납니다. (웃음)
How did you find the opportunity to play a role in “Comfort Women: A New Musical”?
I applied for the role in the audition, because, as an actor born and raised in Korea, it was a great opportunity for my identity to be presented to the audience in New York. I sent an audition video of myself singing and acting in English to the casting team. On my way back from the reserve force, I received a call from the production team, presenting an offer for the role. I still remember myself getting excited in a military uniform. (laugh)
2. 무대에 섰을 때 느낌이 어떤가요?
배우들 중에 유일하게 한국에서 태어나고 자란 사람이라, 무대에 서는 매 순간마다 큰 긴장감을 좀처럼 떨쳐버리기 어려워요. 하지만 커튼콜 때 날아오는 박수 소리는 그 이상의 감동으로 다가오더라고요. 이 무대에 설 수 있게 저를 선택해 준 컴포트 우먼팀과 항상 저를 응원해주는 가족들, 친구들 그리고 제 은사님이신 이지나 선생님, 박삼규 선생님께 감사하다고 꼭 말씀드리고 싶습니다. (웃음)
How did it feel to be on the stage?
Every time I get up on the stage, I am always the most nervous one out of the group because English is not my first language. However, when I hear applause from the audience at the end of the performance, the cheer blows me away every single time. I am thankful for the Comfort Women team for providing me with this amazing opportunity and my family, friends and mentors- Jina Lee and Sam Gyu Park- for their continuous support.
3. 뮤지컬하면서 가장 좋은 점, 힘든 점 하나씩 꼽는다면?
무대에 서면서 좋은 점이 참 많은데 가장 좋은 점을 굳이 꼽으라면, 저는 무대에서 관객들의 반응을 실시간으로 느끼면서 연기할 수 있다는 점이에요. 배우는 관객의 박수와 환호를 통해 에너지를 받고 살아가는 직업이라고 생각하거든요. 힘든 점은 음.. 매너리즘에 빠지지 않도록 계속 노력 하는 부분이 아닐까 해요. 관객들은 매번 바뀌지만 무대에서 연기하는 저희들은 항상 같은 대사와 큐로 움직이거든요. 작품에 익숙해지면서 비싼 돈을 주고 먼 걸음을 한 관객들에게 지루하고 뻔한 연기를 보여주고 있지는 않나 항상 되돌아보며 채찍질하는 점이 가장 어려운 거 같아요.
What are the pros and cons of being a musical actor?
There are a lot! The best part would be directly witnessing the reactions of the audience from the stage. I believe actors live off of the energy they get from the audience. When I see and feel their emotions from my acts, it feels like they are a part of the show like the actors.
The hardest part of being an actor is being aware of my acting skills in order to avoid falling into a habit of mannerism. We – actors and actresses - follow the same routine and pattern in every performance, but new audience come in every day, and they would be watching our show for the first time. Due to these thoughts, we worry about showcasing a mundane act to the audience, as we are used to the story and the routine, and we do our best to be aware of these mentalities in order to present the best performance.

4. 다른 외국 배우들과의 호흡은 어떠신가요?
한글이 아닌 영어로 연기를 하는게 처음이라 초반에는 굉장히 어색하고 서로 반응하는게 낯설었는데, 동료들의 도움으로 시간이 지나면서 점점 더 나아지고 편해지는 것을 느낄 수 있었습니다.
How is the experience of acting with foreign actors?
This is my first time acting in English, and it was initially tough and awkward. My team supported my lingual skills during our practice, and we were able to get more comfortable with one another. As the cast is now much closer, we are now able to bring our close emotional connection to the stage.
5. 민식 언더스터디로 시작해서 다양한 앙상블들을 많이 맡으셨는데, 어떻게 다 커버할 수 있었는지 궁금해요.
뉴욕에 처음 왔을 때 아는 사람도 없고 할게 많이 없어서 운동과 대본을 보는 일로 대부분의 시간을 보냈어요. 연습실에서 다른 사람들이 연기하는 걸 녹음, 녹화 한 뒤 따라하면서 많이 배웠던 것 같아요. 그리고 결정적으로 친한 동료배우들의 도움이 아니었다면 해내지 못했을 일이라고 생각합니다. 정말로요.
You started off with understudying the role of Minsik, and you took part in various ensembles. How did you manage to cover so many roles?
When I first came to New York, I didn’t know anyone, and I did not have much to do in the city. Most of the time, I was either exercising in a gym or reading the scripts. I recorded performances of my team, and I watched the videos in order to practice and learn from them. Certainly, I couldn’t have done this without my colleagues’ support.
6. 뉴욕이 처음이라고 들었는데 첫인상이 어땠나요?
정말 정신이 하나도 없었어요. 많은 사람들과 관광객들로 거리는 항상 바쁘고, 특히 지하철 체계가 서울에 비해 너무 어려워서 길도 많이 헤맸어요. 하지만 뉴욕의 하늘은 그 어디에서 본 하늘보다 아름다웠어요!
This is your first time in New York! What was your first impression of the city?
Frankly, I had no idea what was going on in the city. All streets are busy and full of tourists. New York subway, especially, gave me a hard time. NYC is more complicated than Seoul, and I got lost numerous times. However, I think New York City has the most beautiful skyline in comparison to other cities that I visited.
7. 앞으로 또 뉴욕 브로드웨이 무대에 설 기회가 생긴다면?
그런 감사한 기회가 또 온다면 꼭 다시 한 번 뉴욕에서 공연을 해보고 싶습니다. 물론 지금보다 더 많이 발전한 상태에서요!
What would you do if you found another opportunity in a Broadway show?
I would love to come back to New York again! Of course, I hope I would be a more prepared and mature actor by that time.
8. 뉴욕에 오기 전과 지금, 스스로에게 가장 달라진 부분이 있다면?
‘머리 길이’ 예요. 한국에서 길러온 머리를 전부 잘라 버렸거든요. (웃음) 농담이구요, 더 감사한 마음으로 삶에 임하는 자세를 가질 수 있었던 것 같아요. 이런 기회가 절대 쉽게 오지 않는걸 알기에 감사하는 마음으로 살아야겠다 라는 생각을 매일 하게 되요. 연기를 늦게 시작한 만큼 누구보다 열심히 노력하자 라는 마음으로 지금 살고 있습니다. 바쁜 하루가 지나가면, 가끔은 제가 미국에서 공연을 하고 있다는 것이 실감이 나지 않을 때가 많아요. 이제 막공까지 얼마 남지도 않았는데 말이에요. (웃음) 마지막 날 까지 후회없이 모든 것 보여드리고 가도록 노력하겠습니다!
Do you feel different about yourself after your journey in New York?
The length of my hair. I had to shave all of the hair that I grew in Korea! (laugh) Truthfully, I was able to get a chance to appreciate my life even more sincerely than ever before. I know this kind of opportunity doesn’t often come to an actor, and I always remind myself of how lucky I am to be here. I started my acting career later than others. I have so much to catch up on in comparison to the more experienced actors, which keeps me humble and hardworking in my line of work. I only have few weeks left in New York, and I still cannot believe that I have been performing on a stage in New York off-Broadway! I will be sure to put up the best performance until the last day of the show!
9. 한국에 돌아가서 가장 먼저 하고싶은 일은 뭔가요?
집에서 어머니가 해주신 밥을 가장 먼저 먹고 싶어요. 그리고 다음 작품을 위해 끊임없이 노력하며 살아가야죠.
What is the first thing you want to do when you go back to Korea?
I am craving my mother’s cooking so much. I can’t wait to eat her food soon. I will continue to work hard for my next stage! I will keep moving forward with my passion wherever I am in the future.
