다가오는 12월 4일, 뉴욕한국문화원에서 진행되는 오렌지 라운드 테이블에서는 뉴욕에서 활동하는 이하윤 (Hayoon Jay Lee), 노혜리 (Hyeree Ro), 진오 (Jean Oh), 전효주 (Hyoju Cheon) 네 명의 예술가들이 각자의 작품 세계를 소개하며 해외에서 활동하는 아시아 여성 예술가들의 다양한 가능성과 미래를 탐구하는 시간을 갖습니다. 미술을 사랑하는 혹은 예술을 전공한 모든 이들이 자유롭게 참여할 수 있으며 서로의 경험과 아이디어를 공유하는 협업적 상호작용을 통해 풍성한 대화를 나눌 기회를 제공합니다.

이번 행사는 문화체육관광부와 예술경영지원센터가 주관하는 ‘2024 한국미술 비평문 번역지원사업’의 일환으로 뉴욕과 서울에서 활동 중인 정재연(@jaeyeeeeeon )독립 큐레이터 기획 아래, KANA가 협력하여 새롭게 단장한 뉴욕한국문화원에서 진행되었습니다.

The 2024 KANA Summer Exhibition, a collaboration between KANA and Gallery Chang, will take place from July 30 to August 18. The exhibition is divided into two parts:

Part 1: Binary Equilibrium and Part 2: Unbound Playground. Through this summer project, KANA aims to introduce artists with Korean roots in New York to a broader audience and create a platform for sharing inspiration and communication.

Part 2 ’Unbound Playground‘ presents the works of 6 artists who use their unique visual languages and playful expressions to depict experiences, memories, and emotions. These pieces, characterized by whimsical perspectives, vibrant colors, and diverse materials, visually reconstruct personal moments from everyday life.

2024년 KANA Summer Exhibition 행사로 KANA와 Gallery Chang이 협업하여 7월 30일부터 8월 18일까지 두 그룹 전시가 Part1: Binary Equilibrium과 Part 2: Unbound Playground 로 나뉘어 개최된다. 이번 여름 전시 프로젝트를 통해 KANA는 뉴욕에서 한국이라는 공통된 배경을 가진 작가들을 더 많은 사람들에게 알리고 서로 영감을 공유할 수 있는 소통의 장을 만들어가고자 한다.

Part 2 ‘Unbound Playground’는 일상 속 경험, 기억, 감정에서 출발한 여섯 작가들의 각기 다른 시각적 언어와 유희적인 표현으로 이루어진 작업들을 선보인다. 낯설지만 유쾌한 작가들의 세계관을 포함해 감정을 기록한 색감과 다양한 재료의 성질을 이용한 작업들은 무심코 스쳐지나가는 일상 속 순간들을 시각적으로 재구성하여 보여준다.

Part 1 ’Binary Equilibrium‘ features 8 artists paired together, exploring the meaning of life through their inner worlds and personal experiences. 11월 10일, 한국 아티스트들의 작품을 맨하탄의 작은 한국, K-town에서 소개하는 Sarang 전시의 오프닝 나잇 <잔치(Janchi)> 가 열렸습니다. 이번 잔치는 Wellcome Collective와 KANA가 함께 호스트가 되어 선보였습니다.
Wellcome Collective와 KANA가 함께 호스트 했던 이번 잔치에 정말 많은 분들께서 발걸음해 주셨는데요! 특히 KANA의 Makku와 BBQ 치킨, 그리고 한국의 잔치상 음식들과 이광민 작가의 디제잉으로 Sarang 전시의 오프닝 나잇은 서로의 사랑을 이야기하는 아트의 순간, 따뜻한 환대의 밤으로 물들었습니다. Sarang 전시에 대한 여러분들의 뜨거웠던 사랑을 기억하며, KANA가 한국 아티스트들의 전시를 서포트할 수 있었던 뜻 깊은 현장의 순간들을 공유합니다.

17일날 팝업 이벤트로 참여했던 KANA의 한인 셰프들이 다양한 한국 식품을 활용해 직접 창작한 특별한 레시피를 많은 분들이 좋아해 주셨습니다. 해산물 꼬치와 땅콩고추마요, 참치마요 마늘쫑 미니김밥, 견과멸치볶음과 알감자구이, 대구 김말이, 참치 타르타르와 김부각 등의 메뉴로 방문객들의 입맛을 사로잡고, 많은 분들이 레시피를 궁금해하시며 더욱 활기찬 이벤트가 되었습니다.

올해로 열세 번째를 맞은 이번 톡톡톡의 주제는 바로 "Branding: Mastering the Art of Identity"입니다.

우리는 나 자신을, 그리고 나의 브랜드를 다른 사람들이 쉽게 떠올리고, 기억하고, 공감할 수 있도록 하기 위해 많은 노력을 기울입니다. Personal Branding, Food Branding, Fashion Branding 등 다양한 분야와 맞물려 뻗어나가는 만큼 정의 내리기 힘들지만, 세밀하게 설계되어야하는 Branding은 그만큼 사람들에게 익숙하면서도 어떻게 풀어나가야할지 막막한 분야이기도 합니다. 

많은 젊은 크리에이티브들이 자신만의 브랜드를, 혹은 자기 자신을 브랜드로서 설립하고 발전시키기 위해 끊임없이 고민하고 있는 추세인 만큼, KANA는 뉴욕에서 Branding에 관련하여 실무적으로 경험을 쌓아오고 있는 전문가들의 이야기를 들어보기로 하였습니다. 

이번 톡톡톡에서는 뉴욕의 유명 레스토랑, Atomix, Atoboy, Naro 등을 운영하는 NA:EUN Hospitality의 Operations Director, Ahris Kim님, 뉴욕에 기반하여 BTS, 수지, 김희애 등의 셀럽들이 착용하고 뉴욕, 일본, 한국의 Vogue, Allure와 같은 유명 매거진과 협업하고 있는 주얼리 패션 브랜드 Avec NYC 의 Chloe & Kate님, SJR 컨설팅 회사에서 Art Director로 계시다, 현재는 Ralph Lauren에서 Senior Creative Designer로 일하고 계신 Catherine Choi님을 모셨습니다.

카나 요리팀의 셰프님들이 여러분을 “Summer Night In Brooklyn" 팝업키친으로 초대합니다! 6월 17일, "The Knife Factory"에서 브루클린의 힙과 한인 셰프님들의 소울이 결합된 4코스 만찬을 선보일 예정입니다.

Le Bernardin, The Modern, Marea 등 뉴욕에서 유명한 레스토랑들에서 활발히 활동하고 있는 카나의 한인 셰프님들이 “I work at xx restaurant, and I am Korean” 을 주제로 이 날을 위해 특별히 메뉴를 구성했습니다. 하나의 주방에서 여러 셰프님들이 모여 만들어내는 예술적인 요리를 직접 맛볼 수 있는 특별한 경험을 제공합니다. 4코스 만찬 이후엔 네트워킹을 할 수 있는 해피아워 시간도 마련되어 있습니다. 이 때 작은 이벤트와 핑거푸드 및 스페셜 칵테일을 즐겨주시면 됩니다.

The chefs of KANA Culinary Team invite you to the "Summer Night in Brooklyn" pop-up kitchen! On June 17th at "The Knife Factory,” we will be presenting a 4-course meal that blends the vibrant scene of Brooklyn with the spirit of our Korean chefs.

KANA's Korean chefs, who currently work in famous restaurants in New York including Le Bernardin, The Modern, and Marea, have specially curated a menu for this event with the theme "I work at xx restaurant, and I am Korean." It will be a unique experience where multiple amazing chefs come together in one kitchen to create artistic dishes that you can taste firsthand.

After the 4-course dinner, we are also hosting a happy hour where you can enjoy small events, finger foods, and special cocktails while networking with other guests and members of the KANA team.

가장 같이 일 하고 싶은 사람으로 “People who are hungry”를 원한다는 그녀. 뷰티와 패션 업계에서 몸으로 직접 부딪히며 쌓아온 Sylvia Yang의 창조적 안목과 생생한 실무 노하우를 카나에서 공개하고자 합니다.

As a previous Associate Design Director at MAC Cosmetics for four years and a current Art Director at Alice and Olivia, Silvia Yang has expanded her field of expertise from the beauty industry to the fashion industry.

She says, the most desired type of people that she wants to work with is the “people who are hungry.” Just like what she says, Silvia Yang has been an avid and relentless learner, creator, and negotiator throughout her career.

KANA Pop-up Store 2015: Jammin' NYC

Do you remember that time when New York was a dream city to all of us? But being jammed with people, cars, sirens, and workloads is too much. To transform your stressful New York life into dreamy days again, you need some refreshment and sweetness!

KANA (Korean Association of New York Artists) was founded in 2012 to introduce young Korean artists and designers based in New York to broader audiences. This November, KANA is opening a pop-up store, “Jammin’ NYC”, to expand its programs and interactions with New York community. The event will be held in XY Atelier, located at 81 Hester St in Manhattan, from November 1st to 14th.

Get away with traffic jams and come taste some real good fruit jams. Get relaxed in our pop-up store with good music and artsy workshops to keep you creative and alive. Are you ready to go "jammin"?!

KOREAN DESSERT MAKING CLASS

  • Beginners  NOV. 7TH  SAT 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
    (preschool - elementary school)

  • Intermediate  NOV. 7TH  SAT 2:00- 4:00pm (middle-high school, adults)

  • Adavanced  NOV. 7TH  SAT 4:30- 6:30pm (seniors)

CIA culinary students will lead a 2 hour class with 15 people. 3 types of classes will be provided. There will be two instructors in each class:

In Class  Kana's cooking team (CIA students) welcomes people of all ages and backgrounds. Please visit to learn how to make a Korean traditional non-glutinous half moon rice cake! It is a rice cake steamed on a layer of pine needles. After watching tutorials by CIA students, participants will make the shape of half moon, pumpkin, and flower with beautiful natural color doughs (which is made by non-glutinous rice powder). Then, fill the stuff into the dough with sesame seeds and other ingredients such as honey, sugar, salt and cinnamon powder. Each student will make 15 half moon rice cakes by themselves, as well as enjoying a free half moon rice-cake tasting. The instructors will prepare the ingredients and recipe that students can bring home to share rice cakes with their lovely friends or family as gifts.

FIGURE DRAWING CLASS

In Class 

Have you always wanted to learn to draw or develop your childhood skills? We are offering you a confidence enhancing drawing class, suitable for beginners and those who feel a little bit set in their way of drawing. This is great one-off  class to join. Not only the live model will pose for the class, but also the students are highly encouraged to pose for better understanding of figure drawing, and for fun. Students will learn to draw variety of poses where they will aim for strong gesture and draftsmanship. Poses will be relatively short, to focus on capturing the movements and fundamental construction of the figure, and understanding the abstract rhythms that make the figure such an important and captivating subject. There will be constant demonstrations as well as critiques. We plan for a small class setting with a maximum of 10 students. All basic materials will be provided but you are welcome to bring materials of your choice if you so wish.

Instructor

Hae Lin Park is an artist, a writer, and is planning to work in the museum education field. She received BFA Fine Arts degree from School of Visual Arts and recently finished Visual Arts Administration Master's program in New York University. Her recent works are abstract landscape in mixed media installation. She is a co-founder, and writer of Art Triangle which features the art world of NYC.

CANVAS COLLAGE CLASS: DIVE INTO DADA

What is DADA?   

DADA is the reason why Marcel Duchamp turned an upside down and signed it. Then he became a significant figure in art history. DADA was a form of artistic anarchy, challenging the existing values in the society. Many different forms of contemporary arts (such as theatre, painting and music) were part of this movement. 

In Class

To remove the self from art, the instructor Young Sun will guide students through a set of instructions to make the most out of random chance. Through this class, students will learn how to take advantage of each situation, making the decisions they can between the restrictions. Students will walk away with a collage media form as a final piece that reflects their artistic persona.

Basic color theory, The history and artistic significance of the DADA movement, How to visually solve the problems, Critique & Feedback

All basic materials will be provided. Students are encouraged to bring supplies they would like to include in their final pieces. As this class will focus on a collage, magazines and other collage materials will be useful. Classes will take place in a small classroom setting with an estimated attendance of 10 per class.

Hyesu Lee, an illustrator based in Brooklyn, NY, is collaborating with KANA for the interior design and art wall installation. 2015 Democracy Prep Korean Street Festival

카나는 지난 5월 16일(토)에 열린 '데모크라시 프렙(Democracy & Prep) 코리안 스트리트 페스티벌 2015' 에 참여했습니다. 

한국식 교육 가치를 목표로 삼아 전교생이 필수 외국어로 한국어를 배워 눈길을 끌고 있는 미국 뉴욕 할렘의 '데모크라시 프렙 공립학교'에서 열린 이 행사는 뉴욕을 대표하는 대규모 한국 문화∙예술 행사 중 하나입니다.   

카나는 한국 홍보전문가 서경덕 성신여대 교수와 한식 홍보에 열성인 배우 이영애의 후원으로 큰 화제를 모았던 작년 페스티벌에 처음 참여해, 직접 제작한 한글 교육 자료를 통한 한글 이름 쓰기 프로그램, 길거리 분필 아트와 페이스 페인팅 등 다양한 프로그램들을 진행했습니다. 

특별히 이번 행사에서는, 한국적 감각과 독특한 디자인으로 모마 디자인 숍과 메트로폴리탄 박물관 숍 등에 진출한 한국 디자인 상품 회사 퍼니피쉬(Funny Fish)와의 콜라보레이션을 통해 제작한 '한글 메시지 안경'을 처음 선보이며 뜨거운 관심을 받았습니다. 

내년에도 많은 기대 부탁드립니다!

KANA participated in ‘Democracy & Prep Korean Street Festival 2015’ on May 16th.

'Democracy & Prep Korean Street Festival' is a large-scaled and representative event of the Korean culture and art community in New York, which has taken place at Democracy Prep High School in Harlem and embedded Korean educational values and teaching methods in their academic curriculum, requiring the entire student body to learn Korean as a foreign language.

We introduced ‘Hangul Message Glasses,’ which came to fruition via a collaborative effort between KANA and Funny Fish, a Korean maker's lab that has been featured at MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art with fun and unique designs.
